Jungle Cat
The Jungle Cat (Felis chaus), is also called the Swamp
Lynx. However the Jungle Cat is not related to the lynx. Jungle cats are
small cats who have a short tail. Jungle cats vary in color from
yellowish-grey to reddish brown. Jungle Cat kittens have stripes or bars
on their fur that disappear by the time they are grown. These small exotic
cats have pointed ears and quite long legs, which reminds you of a lynx.
The jungle cat looks a lot like a large housecat but it certainly does NOT act
like a house cat.
| This Jungle Cat photo was
taken in Tampa, Florida at the educational sanctuary, Big Cat Rescue. The
photo is of a rescued Jungle Cat. People thought it would make a good pet
then needed to dump it when they found out that Jungle Cats NEVER make god
pets. |

Felis chaus

legs and shorter tails. |

Female Jungle Cats weigh about 10 pounds. |
Since the Jungle Cat looks so much like an oversized house
cat can it be tamed if I raise it from a bottle before its eyes open?
 |
The Jungle cat may LOOK like an over sized house cat, but that
is where the similarities STOP! |
 |
NO MATTER HOW you raise a Jungle Cat it will NOT be tame like
a house cat. |
 |
It IS a carnivore, a wild animal and will ALWAYS act like one. |
 |
It WILL spray everything in your house, including you, with
urine. There is no way around that. |
 |
It WILL eat you other pets and your neighbors' pets. Which I
am sure will make you quite popular in your neighborhood. |
 |
it's dietary needs are not properly filled y plopping cat food
in front of it. |
 |
You WILL end up with scratches and bites on YOU AND on your
children, and on your company and their children. |
 |
Again, I am sure that will make you quite popular and envied
among your friends, relatives and neighbors. |

to keep from becoming prey themselves. |
Is the Jungle Cat a wild animal or a domestic cat?
The Jungle Cat is NOT a domestic cat. Jungle Cats ARE wild
animals and should never e kept as a pet. However, sadly, the Jungle Cat
has been crossed hybridized with the Domestic Cat, resulting the "Chausie"
breed. It is NOT a good pet.
What about Reproduction?
 | The male Jungle Cat barks like a dog during mating season. |
 | The males are very protective of their kittens. |
Status:
The Jungle Cat has been considered in no danger of extinction. This
means for the most part it has been ignored as a rare specie. However, the
Jungle Cat is possibly one of the rarest species of wild small exotic cats in
Asia, especially the rarest not to have any protections in place.
In the Caucasus the Jungle Cat is fairly common but that may not last long
beause of how massively it is hunted for its fur.
The Jungle Cat is considered rare in its African range.
It is also considered pretty rare through the Middle East. In the
Middle East the Jungle Cat is subject to very heavy hunting and is often
poisoned. It is viewed as scarce in the Middle East.
In the country of Jordan the only Jungle Cats seen in recent years are ones
that have been killed with poisons.
